Bournemouth-based weather enthusiast UK Extreme Weather said the festive season could usher in a cold spell - but it's still far too early to tell if it will be a white Christmas. 

Speaking on Wednesday night, he said: “Right now and as things stand I would favour a colder Christmas period than normal, models are converging on a north westerly airflow possibly northerly at times, bringing the chance of wintry showers as we lead up to the big day, especially to northern and western parts.

Still a way off and it could change so expectations are tempered for now in terms of a white Christmas (for some), a few more days before this becomes forecastable with any degree of certainty.

"But the odds of a technical white Christmas somewhere in Blighty must be dropping."

He said: "We usually stay cold but dry, a more north westerly direction would favour showers spreading to our region and if the air is cold enough we could see some wintry weather."
